At the annual Town Council meeting held on Wednesday 9 May, Cllr Ken Smout was elected as Chair of Council and Town Mayor for 2012/13 and his wife Janet as his Mayoress.

Cllr Martin Cox and Cllr Mrs Pauline Pollard were elected as deputy Mayor and Mayoress, and Highbridge member Cllr Mike Mansfield as second deputy Mayor

Cllr Smout, a retired police officer, has been a member of Burnham and Highbridge Town Council for  9 years, and for the last year also a member of Sedgemoor District Council. During his term of office he has acted as Chair of both the Town Improvements Committee and the Staffing committee, and played a large role in writing strategies as a member of the Policy & Finance Committee.
